Well, I am downloading THIS in a heartbeat.
Still and always my favorite team-up ever. (This is Marvel Team-Up v3 #14, btw, if anyone wants to check it out.)
Ben: Guess what time it is! Peter: Really, you’ll never guess! Carol: Is it clobberin’ time?! Peter: Oh, man. You guessed it right off the bat! First try! Ben: Guys, you called me all the way out here, the least you could do is let me do my own catchphrase!
— From New Avengers v2, #23 by Brian Michael Bendis, art by Mike Deodato & Will Conrad
SPIDEY:[on the Savage Land] All kinds of mutates and dinosaurs and big cheetahs and a surprising amount of acceptable nudity. LUKE CAGE: Are you #$%$ing me? SPIDEY: No. But it doesn’t matter — we probably won’t survive the crash. LUKE CAGE: What crash? SPIDEY: You don’t go to the Savage Land without crashing. IRON MAN: You’ve never been there with me driving. SPIDEY: Uh-huh…
[They land successfully.] IRON MAN: See? SPIDEY: I stand corrected.
[Next panel: a giant dinosaur stomps the quinjet.]
That wasn’t Bendis fault though, that was editorial. They didn’t remember his ID because of OMD and all that.
It’s a little confusing because this particular New Avengers arc was coming out at the same time as One More Day, but unless I’m misremembering, the team knew Spidey was Peter Parker at that point; he was walking around unmasked in the same story. Anyway, we’re not talking about Jess not knowing Peter is Spidey; we’re talking about her seeing an image of the boy she had a serious fascination with in high school and not recognizing him. I mean, it’s not impossible, but when she’s also seeing that image in association with a guy who has the same name as the kid she was crushing on, it really does stretch plausibility.
babemagi asked: you mentioned Bendis screwing up Peter and Jess' reunion the first time. I was wondering if you could explain what happened please (I'm rather new to Marvel) ???
Basically, during the first, pre-Civil War iteration of New Avengers — several years’ worth of comics — Peter and Jess were shown interacting with each other, without masks, without giving any hint that they recognized each other. Then during the Secret Invasion event, when the New Avengers were underground and had just discovered that shapeshifting Skrulls were infiltrating Earth society in preparation for an invasion, Dr. Strange cast a spell that was supposed to confirm everyone’s identities by showing images of their inner selves. Peter’s image was himself right before he got his powers, looking exactly as he did in Jessica’s high school flashbacks of having a crush on him … and Jess didn’t recognize him.
And then the internet was duly impressed that Bendis had managed to forget his own story, because he was the same writer who’d established that Jess had a high school crush on Peter Parker in the first place! Sigh.
It cracks me up how Bendis used OMD to give himself a do over on flubbing Peter and Jess’ reunion the first time around.
Also, I’m really not a Billy Tan fan at all, but I gotta give him props on great use of body language. Even without the dialogue you can tell what all the different characters are feeling — Peter’s not-displeased awkwardness, Jessica’s delight mingled with just that teensy bit of flirting, Luke’s incredulity and increasing discomfort, Wolverine merrily not giving a fuck.
